25 Beauty Rules to Break!

In Uncategorized by ashleemillerartistry / April 1, 2014 /

1.  Brown eye shadow is just for blue eyes:  While Brown eye shadow does make blue eyes pop , the right brown does look great on pretty much everyone.  My go to is from MAC Cosmetics in Cork.

2. Only use Lip liner on you inside of your lips:  I like to break every lip liner rule there is.  Personally I like to slightly over draw my upper and lower lips as well as fill in my whole lip with the same color, lightly powder them and add my favorite lip gloss over them. Currently my favorite gloss is from MAC Cosmetics in Please Me. NYX has amazing waterproof lip liner at a great price, Nordstrom Rack carries them of $5.

3. Brushes are best for applying makeup:  Although there is much truth to this, I sometimes find putting on concealer with my index finger warms the product and makes for a smooth application and can be quick and easy.  I also like to dab my lipgloss on with my index finger as well, it makes for a light application. you can find awesome and affordable brushes at Sephora.

4. Whether you have warm or cool skin, only wearing makeup within your color family: This is the very first “rule” I learned as a makeup artist. Although this is a generally a good rule. Don’t limit yourself! Cool eyes on warm skin can cause a perfect contrast and look AMAZING!

5. Hairspray is just for hair:  Sometimes I put hairspray on my eyebrows to tame my hairs.  When I am desperate and need a makeup setting spray I revert to hairspray. Call me crazy but it works!

6. Only apply blush on the apples of your checks: In fact you should apply blush were you would naturally blush.

7. Wash your hair everyday:  Its best to have some natural oils present to keep your hair and scalp healthy. Ironically washing your hair too often can dry it out.  If you feel you need a little help in between washes try dry shampoo, it works wonders.

8. Hair and Eyebrow color should match:  Blondes with matching eyebrows look summery and sun-kissed, but almost looks better with some slightly darker definition around their eyes.

9. Apply face makeup after you finish your eyes: This still applies, but before putting on heavy eye makeup, try applying a thick layer of translucent powder under your eye them wipe off afterward it will take off any stray shadow.

10. Don’t pop your Zits, no matter what:Popping pimples is never going to be great, but there are pimple popping tools to help and topical creams to calm and sooth. “I’m soooo guilty of popping with my fingers”

11. You should exfoliate your skin everyday:  Nothing beats the soft, clean skin you get from exfoliating, but exfoliating every 2 days is best to reduce risk of irritation.

12. Bronzer is not just for the face:  Bronzer is for every part of you. Face, neck, collar bones, cleavage and now there are body bronzers. Become that inner golden goddess without the harm of UV rays.

13. Don’t mix metals: Common sense dictates that should stick to gold or silver but try mixing them, it can be fun!

14. Hairstyle should be neat:  Ha…!!!  I am the queen of messy hair, braids, buns. I love effortless hair looks and styles.

15. Dryer sheets are just for laundry:  Rubbing a dryer over hair to remove static.

16. Grey hair should be covered:  Well since I am going grey now and really who has time to. Find a way to own it!  As for men I think it looks very Dapper!

17. White liner on the inner eye:  I like to break that rules and use nude its less obvious and still works great to brighten the eye.

18. Purple shadow should be kept in the 90’s:  No way! Let loose!

19. Only follow your natural shape when filling in your eyebrows:  While generally this is good advice , its always good to try new trends. Try using a brow shaping kit. Anastasia is a great brand that has kits with varies         eyebrow shapes, they can be found at Sephora.

20. Don’t mix scents:  Mixing scented lotions and perfume can create a one-of-a-kind blend.

21. Only use highlighter on check bones:  You can add highlighter from your check bones, to the bridge of your nose and a touch in the corners of your eyes, this will brighten you whole face.

22. Concealer should be lighter than your skin:  When concealing blemishes it can be beneficial to use a concealer that matches your skin tone.

23. Don’t wear makeup to the gym:  O please!  I don’t check my mail without makeup.  You have to do what makes you feel comfortable simple as that. If working out with a full face of makeup on works for you then work       it!

24. Dark lips and polish are only for summer:  I think a royal blue polish and burgundy lip can look gorgeous no matter the season.

25. Eyebrow pencils are the best method:  Gel and shadow colors with an angle brush can look very natural,  last just as long especially a great waterproof gel. My favorite is Makeup Forever’s brow gel found at Sephora.

I spend much of my time with brides, through emails, coffee dates, lunches, makeup consultations, and of course their wedding day. Many of these ladies become friends to me, we share stories, their worries about their wedding day;  from the mother in laws to the first dance but one concern I hear most often is “I hope my wedding dress fits me/my ( insert choice words)  the day of my wedding”. Well ladies, brides and friends I have a solution that works. Its called It Works!  I have personally used this product and I am a big fan. I asked my friend Kristin to write up a something to tell you little bit more about It Works!

It Works! Is an amazing health and wellness company transforming  women’s and men’s bodies all over the nation. That’s right ladies you can get your man in shape too.

Frequently asked questions:

What are the ingredients?
These are completely natural and are made with mostly herbs.  Ingredients can be found on the website below.
Will this just dehydrate me?
No! These are NOT the same as the salon wraps that dehydrate you. These work on a cellular level. You will drink 2 bottles of water while you are wrapped and half your body weight in ounces each day for 72 hours. If the results only occurred if you were dehydrated we wouldn’t ask you to be drinking water. Then no one would see results.
Where can I put these wraps? Is there a different wrap I have to buy for each body part?
You can wrap your chin, arms, breasts, back, stomach, butt or legs. No, you do not need to purchase different wraps. You just cut the wraps in half to wrap the particular area you are trying to target.
Can I wrap my face?
Yes you can wrap your face, just not with these. We have completely different wraps for your face called face wraps.
Face wrap
How many wraps will I need to use?
Most people see results after just one wrap, but every body is different, results will very on different related factors. 4 wraps is considered a full treatment in one area. You can continue to wrap every three days until you see the results that you desire.
How long will my results last?
Depending on your lifestyle, results can last 2-6 months. If you eat a lot of fast food, drink a lot of soda or diet soda results will not last as long. If you are eating right and drinking plenty of water results will last longer.
Are these meant to replace diet and exercise?
Not at all, these are meant to be used in conjunction with living a healthier lifestyle. You will be so excited once you see the wrap results you will want to continue making better choices.
How often do I need to wrap to maintain my results?
To maintain your results we recommend wrapping the problem area once every few months or by using our defining gel as needed.
Do you only sell wraps?

Spring In TO Summer

In Uncategorized by ashleemillerartistry / February 26, 2014 /

Wow where did this year go in a little less than a week March will be here which means spring is in the air and summer is short to follow.  As the temperatures start to change so does our skin and hair …

These are a few of my go to Tips and Trick to survive the warmer weather and look fabulous.

  1. The sun is shining and so are my pasty legs that have been hidden behind jean and yoga pants all winter. Recently I made the most amazing coconut body scrub, but of course you can use any scrub you’d like. After shaving off the winter fur I scrub from head to toe literally don’t forget your feet they will be sliding into those cute strappy sandals you got on sale last year and have been waiting all winter to wear. The scrub with gently exfoliate your skin sloughing off all the dead cell leaving it silky and smooth ready for the next step.

  1.  Getting your summer glow on without the harsh UV rays.  Let’s face it fake tanners don’t always look perfect but it’s better than the alternative, exposing yourself harmful UV rays through natural sunlight and tanning beds.  Have I found the perfect self-tanner (no who has), I have been orange, dirt brown, and pink with sparkles in some cases.  I find the best way to start to build that healthy glow is to use lotions with a gradual tanner, leaves you hydrated, little to no smell and streak less.  I never use self-tanners on my face but I do bring it up to my jaw line.  If I am going to use a self-tanner I love the ones with a bronzer currently Ultas store brand ($6-$8) has been in my top selections.  If you have time I do recommend getting an airbrush tan ($20-50) from a professional it looks amazing! I typically do this for special occasions; I would do it all the time IF I had the time.

  1.  Now that you are silky smooth and glowing like the goddess you are, let your smiling shine bright.  I love white teeth. I am a coffee and red wine drinker but I do not want my teeth to show it.  I LOVE my Crest Whitening Vivid Advanced strips you can get 14 week treatment for roughly $60 at Walgreens, CVS, Walmart.  I do these treatments about every 3-6 months. Sometimes I will do a week and save a week for a special occasion (trip, wedding, family photos.)

  1.  Pretty in Pink… Pastels, creams…  It’s time to change your polish from those deep winter colors to cool spring tones. Once summer officially hits you can really brighten up to hot pinks, neon’s options are endless… I am a big fan of Ciate “Cookies and Cream” which can be found at Sephora. I also really like the Butter London brand which can be found at Sephora and Ulta.

          ciate2 butter-london-sweetie-shop-spring2013-nails

  1.  Get that bounce back in you “hair”!  Winter can do a number on your locks, drying it out, making it brittle and even break. Here are few ideas that have worked for me: Coconut oil hair treatments ( 15 min hair mask ) then wash as normal with moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, if you need that little it of extra moisture try a leave in spray conditioner. I am a fan of Biolage Ultra Hydrating shampoo/conditioner (price varies based o retailer).  Don’t forget to give those hairs a little trim and fresh color (avoid bleaching).

  1.  Spring clean your beauty bag! Take out those warm matte winter colors and replace with soft pink or Coral blushes options are endless, glosses (Lippy is great tons of colors) can be found at Sephora, Bronzers (Cargo) , highlighters ( Mac Mineralized Skinfinsh in Sodst and gentle) and dewy foundation. Sweeten up your scent with a fresh new beachy fragrance. I am loving Beach by Bobby Brown which can be found at Sephora, or my go to the original Juicy Couture never fails me.

Eye Lash Extentions

In Uncategorized by ashleemillerartistry / February 12, 2014 /

I had a pleasure of working with Miss Caitlin Dressler with Lashes By Caitlin

I am obsessed with Eyelashes If I had time to put on  fake ones on everyday I would, which is why I chose to do the lash extentions.  I did start off with a more subtle look only having 25 placed on each eye using the J curl. I love them, now that I have gotten used to them next time I am going to go with most likely 40.

Frequently asked Questions and Anwsers:

Lashes are by Minkys, synthetic mink lashes
How long do lashes last?
Semi-permanent lashes can last up to 2 months, depending on the natural growth cycle of your eyelashes. You will probably want touch-ups every three to four weeks.
Why do you recommend touch-ups that often?
We recommend getting a touch up every two to four weeks. A natural eyelash falls off every 60 to 90 days on average due to the natural growth cycle and is naturally replaced with the growth of a new eyelash. At any given moment, each of your natural eyelashes is at a different stage of its life cycle. A touch up is needed to replenish the lashes that have completed their life cycle.
How long does the initial application take?
An initial application set usually takes anywhere between 90-150 minutes for application. You need to keep your eyes closed the entirety of the process so many clients fall asleep.
How many lashes are applied per eye?
Depending on the look you are trying to achieve, anywhere between 35-80 lashes per eye are applied.
How do the lashes look once complete?
Natural lashes are acheived with the J curl
More pronounced, evening/bridal looks are acheived with either the C or D curl

AFTER WITH MAKEUP ON:  I broke the rules a little and wore my own mascara that is not meant for Lash extentions. I know they do make specific mascara for lash extentions though. For more information regarding the mascara please contact Caitlin ( Contact info listed below)

Best Makeup Tips for Different Eye Shapes.

In Uncategorized by ashleemillerartistry / February 6, 2014 /

Applying makeup isn’t just about technique. You can know all of the tips and tricks in the world but if you don’t know what’s best for your eye shape, you’re not getting the most benefit out of your makeup.

The 9 Different Eye Shapes

There are nine basic eye shapes, each one offering different things to focus on. The nine different eye shapes are:

  • Almond shaped eyes: This one is pretty straight forward. This type of eye is considered to be the ideal shape. It is characterized by eyes that are shaped like almonds.
  • Close set eyes: You have close set eyes if the distance between the inside corner of one eye and the inside corner of the other eye is less than the width of one eye apart.
  • Deep set eyes: Deep set eyes sit further back in the eye socket than most eyes. Those with deep set eyes will also have a small mobile lid over the eye.
  • Down turned eyes: Down turned eyes are, quite simply, turned down on the outer corners. If the outer corners of your eyes are lower than the inner corners of your eyes, you have down turned eyes.
  • Hooded eyes: Hooded eyes are common in older women. This eye shape has a small fold of skin that hangs over the socket line and often partially over the lid as well.
  • Oval eyes: Oval eyes are pretty easy to spot. They’re shaped like ovals. Simple.
  • Protruding eyes: Protruding eyes can be a little difficult to work with thanks to the bulge that runs from the socket to the lash but there are things you can do to make protruding eyes look fantastic.
  • Wide set eyes: You have wide set eyes if the distance between the inside corner of one eye and the inside corner of the other eye is more than the width of one eye apart.

Determining what kind of eye shape you have can be a little tricky but it’s nothing a little time spent looking in the mirror can’t solve. Some women will have combination eyes. If that’s the case with you, experiment with the different eye makeup tips for different eye shapes we’re about to talk about that apply to your eyes and see what you feel most comfortable with. In the end, what you decide to do with your makeup is entirely up to you so have fun and try new things. You may just find your perfect look.

Angelina Jolie has almond shaped eyes

Makeup Tips for Almond Shaped Eyes

Congratulations! You have the ideal eye shape! Almond shaped eyes are considered the perfect eye shape because they’re perfect in terms of proportion. There are no real tips I can offer for almond shaped eyes because everything works for them. So basically, you can follow any of the tips in our eye makeup series and you’re good to go!

Kristen Bell has close set eyes

Makeup Tips for Close Set Eyes

The goal with close set eyes is to make eyes appear wider and draw attention away from the fact the space between the eyes. Because you’re trying to draw attention away from that area, you’re going to want to use light colored makeup around the inner corners of your eye and use darker colors on the outer corners. Skip the eyeliner and mascara on the inner eye and instead focus those products on the outer corners. You can also extend your eyeliner slightly past the corner of the outer corners of your eye. Sweep it up just slightly to follow the natural curve or your lashes. This will make your eyes look wider and will and give them a more proportionate appearance.

Katie Couric has deep set eyes

Makeup Tips for Deep Set Eyes

With deep set eyes, you want to try to bring the eye out and make it look less closed off. You’re first going to want to lighten what is often a dark, shadowy looking eye by applying a light shade of shadow to the lid and inner corner of the eye. Next, choose a medium shade shadow in the same color family and apply it to the crease of the eye. Sweep the same medium shadow under the brow but only use a little bit. You don’t want to make the brow look heavy. Finish up by applying a darker contouring shade at the outer edge of the crease. Sweep the contouring shade up just slightly, following the natural curve of your lashes. One final note, be very careful with eyeliner. People with deep set eyes can use eyeliner on the upper lash line but keep it very light until you get to the outer edge of the lash line. Then you can darken it a little bit but again, only on the outer edge of the lash line.

Marilyn Monroe had down turned eyes

Makeup Tips for Down Turned Eyes

Down turned eyes can make a person look sad even when they’re smiling so you really want to focus on trying to make the eyes look more balanced and leveled. To start, you’re going to apply a small amount of light colored eye shadow in an oval on your eyelid and the corner of your inner eye. Next, you’re going to sweep on a medium shade so it stops just before the edge of your brow. Follow that up by taking a medium-dark shade (not too dark), and sweep it just about the outer crease of your eye, carrying it up to the brow. Blend. Finish up the look by using a little eyeliner on your lower lash line but don’t extend the liner to the outer corner and make sure you don’t use much. A light line is enough.

Blake Lively has hooded eyes

Makeup Tips for Hooded Eyes

Hooded eyes are actually pretty common in women as they age but they can be worked with. Your goal here is to try to reduce the prominence of the lid. To do this, you’re going to start with a light shade of eye shadow or a highlighter product on the brow bone. Apply more of the product you’ve chosen along the lower lash line at the inner corner of your eye. Once you have the light shade in place, take another eye shadow in a slightly darker shade (try to stick with the same color family and make sure you don’t go too dark), and sweep it over your lid. You’re also going to want to put this same shade on the hooded part of your eye. Now finish up with the shadow by taking a dark contouring color and sweeping it over the outer corner of your eye. You’re going to want to bring this contouring shadow up to a light peak, following the natural curve of your lashes. When you’re done with the shadow, it’s time for liner. You’re going to apply your eyeliner to your top and bottom lash lines to accentuate them and draw them out.

Beyonce has oval eyes

Makeup Tips for Oval Eyes

Many different looks work for this eye shape but some women would prefer to give oval eyes more height. Start at the outside corner of your upper lash line and start drawing a line with your eyeliner along the lash line. Make the line a little darker and a little thicker as you get to the center of eye. Make the line lighter again as you move toward the inner corner of the eye. Don’t take the line all the way to the edge of the inner corner. Those with small eyes should skip the liner on the lower lid. Applying liner on the lower lid will make your eye look even smaller still. If you have larger oval shaped eyes you can apply liner to the lower lid but keep the line thin and light.

Nicole Richie has protruding eyes

Makeup Tips for Protruding Eyes

With protruding eyes, the goal is to make the eyes look a little less prominent and make them appear as if they sit a bit further back. This isn’t actually all that hard to do. Start with a dark shadow and apply it to the lid beside the lash line and then again at the base of the eyelid. Finish up with a lighter shadow on the crease of your eye and blend this color all the way to the brow bone. You’ll be amazed by what a different this can make. If you use liner or mascara, keep it light. Both of these things may accentuate the fact that your eyes protrude instead of masking it.

Brandy has wide set eyes

Makeup Tips for Wide Set Eyes

In terms of eye shapes, wide set eyes generally aren’t all that hard to work with. Your goal here is to make the eyes appear a bit closer together. Start by applying a light shade of eye shadow in the center of your upper eyelid. Take a medium shade of shadow and sweep it along your brow bone, starting in the inner corner of the eye and sweeping all the way to the outside. You should end this line with a slant that tilts inward. Take a darker contouring shade and apply it to the outer crease of your eye and just the edge of the upper crease. Finish up by applying eyeliner. You’re going to want to draw the focus to the center of the eye so start by drawing a line with your liner from the outside edge of the upper and lower lash lines so it crosses just slightly over the center. Repeat this process by starting on the inner edge. This gives you just the right amount of extra liner in the center of the lids.

My Step by Step daily makeup routine

In Uncategorized by ashleemillerartistry / January 24, 2014 /

Some of you reading this friends, family know this is a really big deal for me showing my step by step makeup routine not because I don’t love teaching how to apply makeup, giving product suggestions or sharing tips and tricks but because I NEVER EVER let anyone see me without makeup. Its that rare occasion that some have experienced seeing me without makeup on.  Even before I gave birth to my boys I did my makeup.  After my first son I got bad melasma ( Dark blotches on my face) which even made me more insecure, after my last son it was so bad I was wearing my makeup to bed (HUGE NO NO) Silly I know, but it made me feel better about myslef. Then I started Hormone therapy which has put my face in shock… The joys of motherhood and getting older.  Needless to say this will be the first time I have revealed a makeup less face straight from the shower ( Photo reminds me of a wet rat) certainly no Jennifer Aniston from the Break Up.

Typically I give myself about 15 minutes to apply my makeup sometime more if I have the time.

Ok Here goes….. Nervous… Scared…

NO MAKE UP!!!!!! In my bathroom and bathrobe taken from my IPhone.

Step 1:  I use MAC concealer very light ( this will vary depending on your skin tone)  and buff on with my MAC buff brush under my eyes, on my eye lids around my nose, middle of chin and center of forehead. I don’t worry about blending the edges to much because in the next step I will do all of my blending.

Step 2: Using the same type of concealer in a dark shade, I am also using the same blending buff brush. I apply the darker color under my chin and down my neck, the sides of my face lower check area up to my check bone, around the outer side of my face, temples, outer forehead and blend to the center to meet the light color also along the sides of my nose.

Step 3: I take a large power brush a sweep on pressed powered all over face and down neck. I use the sponge that comes with the powder to apply lightly around my eye area including my eye lids.

Step 4: Here I have one of my favorite blushes in a warmer neutral color, a highlighter and a MAC blush brush. I apply the blush onto the apples of my check and sweep back toward my hairline. I apply it  pretty heavy because I know I will be adding a bronzer to contour. The highlighter is lightly applied on my upper check bone, center of forehead and bridge on my nose.

Step 5: This is my FAVORITE bronzer ( on my lazy days I use it as blush to and apply it lightly) but in this case I apply it more heavily under my chin, under my check bone, along my temples and on the outer forehead similar pattern to where I applied the darker concealer. Also using the same brush I applied my powder with.

Step 6: Lips are huge for me I have thin, uneven lips so I am always trying to find way to make them look fuller but natural.  So I use 4 product: lip liner in a neutral color, thick gloss in a very similar color ( This can be done with any color preference I switch it up sometimes), the lighter of the 2 concealers and the face powder. First I apply the liner freshly sharpened ( I feel like it glides on better) all over my lip and I like to draw slightly on the outside of my lip line to create the effect of a  fuller lip. Next I dab with my index finger the light concealer in the center of my lip this helps again with the appearance of a fuller lip, after that I set it with power to help it stay on all day, finally I add a little gloss to the center of my lip. Sometime I will very lightly reline my lip after I powder for more definition.  (imagine explaining that to the girl in grocery store who say I love your lip color what is it…)

Step 7: Eye brows and creating a base for the eye shadow. I use MAC Liner Its not my favorite still have yet to find a favorite in all the years I have been doing makeup, MAC paint pot in a skin color with a brush to apply the eye base. I comb my brows, line then sometimes I’m not very accurate but that’s ok because I can clean up my line using my brush and paint pot. I start but cleaning up under my brow and working my way down to the whole lid. I set with my face powder (not shown) or a lighter eye shadow.

Step 8: I had a tough time taking a photo of my shadow but its very simple, I have a basic brown from MAC called Cork ( I love this color) the same highlighter from earlier and 2 MAC eye shadow brushes. I have deep set eyes, my goal is to make them look less deep set, so I start by sweeping the shadow right above my crease on my eye bone and in the outer corner of my eye creating a V like shape. I use that same shadow with the smaller stiffer brush and place the color on my lash line.  I the use the highlighter sometimes with my index finger right under by brow bone and in the corners of my eye this helps open up the eye and brighten. I use my finger mostly because its one less brush in my makeup case that I do carry everywhere with me.

Blog 1

Step 9: Lashes… If I had the patience and time I would do false lashes everyday. Lashes make your eyes pop, but since I don’t have the time I use Smashbox lash primer that conditions and thickens, one thin coat makes such a difference, lastly I apply 2 generous coats of my FAVORITE mascara by MAC on the top and bottom.

Well that is it…  I hope you enjoyed this and got some good tips and ideas.

How to Shrink a Pimple, Fast

In Uncategorized by ashleemillerartistry / January 23, 2014 /

The morning is full of possibilities…except when you wake up with a giant zit. Then it kinda just bites. You can (and should) dab on a spot treatment with 2 percent salicylic acid, or 5% Benzoyl peroxide Peroxide ( I prefer Benzoyl Peroxide)  but even that takes about a week to do the job. So it’s a good thing there are these ways to shrink it in the meantime. I use the Benzoyl at night as well as a thin layer  under my makeup in the morning.  Clean and Clear makes one in a little tube and can be purchased at any grocery store or corner market ( Walgreens, CVS)

Use an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream as a spot treatment. It contains the same steroids that dermatologists inject into pimples to get rid of them. The more you pile on and the longer you let it sit, the more effective it’ll be. Approximately  15 minutes before rinsing it off.

Speed things along with a clay face mask. Kaolin clay has been shown to draw impurities out of the skin. I actually recommend doing a clay mask once a week, along with regular exfoliation.

Get a face wash with 2% Salicylic Acid or 5% Benzoyl Peroxide. If you’re prone to hormonal zits (which usually occur around the mouth), start using the wash the week before your period and you’ll be less likely to break out. I prefer to use it all the time. Clean and clear also make face wash with the Benzoyl Peroxide in a purple bottle that can be purchased at any grocery store or corner market ( Walgreens, CVS)

Don’t pop the sucker. Doing so can damage skin tissue and make your pimple worse. But if you absolutely, 100 percent cannot help yourself (and you did not hear this from me), take a hot shower and then gently, gently, gently press down on the skin surrounding the pimple with a cotton swab (this prevents you from applying too much pressure). Or just be safe and don’t pop it. I am terrible at this I am a “POPPER” I know I know.

Power of make-up

In Uncategorized by ashleemillerartistry / January 21, 2014 /

We all know what a difference a couple coats of mascara or a slick of lip gloss can make, but the above photo really drives the point home.

The shot, which juxtaposes half a bare and half a made-up face, was posted by “Munner83″ on several months ago. It has since gone viral, and netizens continue to share the picture digitally.

The image is a product of ulzzang. Ulzzang, which translates to “best face” in Korean, describes an online fad in which Asian women are posting before-and-after photos that show a dramatic and often doll-like transformation through cosmetics. In addition to makeup, some women use contact lenses to enlarge their pupils and glue to create creases on their eyelids.

Reactions to the ulzzang trend run the gamut. Some find the transformations artistically creative and beautiful, while others are turned off by what they see as a plastic, inhuman and unattainable glossiness. There is also concern that these types of photos show Eastern women perpetuating Western beauty standards rather than embracing their own culturally distinct features.

While I can understand the concern for celebrating ethnic identity, I’ve always taken issue with the assertion that women look fake when they wear makeup. To me, makeup allows women to be creative in expressing and exploring aspects of their personalities, and why not take joy in being able to accentuate your features with some shadow and blush?

Yet in doing so, it’s important to remind ourselves that the results aren’t necessarily “better.” The right side of the face in the photo shows a woman with great bone structure, glowing skin and kind eyes. She’s lovely without the makeup, and is probably smiling because it only took her five minutes to get ready.

With that said, let’s talk about that left side. Can you say Sophia Loren? Check out the lift of the arched brow, the sweep of the smoky cat eye, the radiant warmth of her blush and those divinely glossed lips. It’s a look that could turn heads on the red carpet.

Some days, we want to be that get-up-and-go girl with fresh skin and an easygoing mien. On other days, we want to be that all-out glamazon, stepping into a room with the grandeur of a silver-screen star.

The two sides of this face seem to symbolize that duality of women. We are always goddesses, beautiful by nature or by artifice. So why limit yourself to just one face?

Preparation for a photo shoot

Have you ever wondered how to bring forth your best features and create that picture perfect moment? I am going to review some simple ways of creating a glamorous photo shoot, just for you. By incorporating these six easy tips, you are sure to impress your targeted audience.

Preparation is the key factor when it comes to creating that picture perfect moment. I always encourage women to prepare for the big day, two weeks in advance. By doing so, your natural features will be accented to their fullest potential.
First, I suggest you begin with purchasing the Crest Whitening Advance Vivid Strips. You want to purchase the 14 day supply kit. I would also suggest you exfoliate two times a week, leading up to the day of your photo shot.

Second, I would consider grooming any facial hair you may have. Your eyebrows will have a nice clean finish, by either waxing or plucking. In addition to your eyebrows, also remember about the fuzz above your top lip. It is best to complete this process within a few days of your photo session. If you have any lip hair, regardless of the color, make up will accentuate it.

Third, giving your skin a tan appearance, is very attractive under the flashing lights. You have two application options that may be completed within a couple days before your big day: self tanner or airbrush. If you select to apply a self tanner, first mix it with lotion. This technique will help to avoid streaks during application. If airbrush tanner is an option for you, the process is simple and it will be sure to give your skin that flawless appearance for your special day.

Fourth, let’s not forget about your fingernails and toenails. Both a manicure and a pedicure, can really set off a photo if it is done within a few days of picture day. I would consider simple colors or French tips, as they equally come out looking elegant and very attractive.

Fifth, I would apply a tinted body lotion, the day of your photo session. This will make your skin look silky smooth and give it that beautiful glow. I recommend avoiding the face, as this will interfere with your makeup application.

Sixth, on your big day, you must decide if you are going to employ a makeup artist or elect to apply it yourself. I have included a list of tips for self application of makeup:
Start with a fresh clean face, the appropriate face cream and a brightening eye cream.

Apply your foundation, but avoid putting any under your eyes. Otherwise when you are applying your eye shadow, it may flake or fall under your eyes.

Before applying your eye shadow, already have an idea of what you want your final results to look like. Tear out a picture from a magazine, as a guide to follow. Apply a small amount of concealer on your eyelid; this will act as a base, to help the eye shadow last longer. Once you have completed applying the eye shadow, you can remove any excess makeup under your eyes with a baby wipe.

Apply your concealer undereye and cover your face with a light reflective powder and a bronze. The coverage area should extend from the forehead down to the neck, collar bone and cleavage.

To complete your glistening eyes, you must remember your eyebrows and eyelashes. Find a eyebrow pencil that is similar to your brow color and fill-in the brow. Finish off your eye lashes with a lash conditioner and mascara. Or if you have opted to apply false lashes, I would suggest a natural looking set.

When you apply your blush, I suggest you smile. The application should begin at the apple of the cheek, working your way back to the hairline.

Lips, have many options. I would highly suggest a liner that is similar in color with the lipstick shade that you will be wearing. In order to sustain a longer life of the lipstick, fill in your lips with the liner and then apply your lipstick over top. Some women may feel more comfortable applying a gloss over the liner. When doing so, try to avoid a high gloss. As this can cause a reflection in your photo.

As you can see, there are many little tips that one can do to complete their photo shoot. With little effort, you can create your picture perfect moment! For more makeup application advice, you may email me at
